The maps and analyses presented in this website are the outcome of 6 years of research in Indonesia and in the UK as part of David L.A. Gaveau’s PhD research at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), University of Kent under the supervision of Prof. Nigel Leader-Williams and Dr. Patrice Levang. The maps were processed within the “Sumatran Landscapes” program of the Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program under the leadership of Dr. Noviar Andayani. The program was funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), the Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program (WCS-IP), Conservation International (CI), the United Nations Educational, and Scientific Organization (UNESCO), and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). The maps of deforestation have been endorsed by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry’s Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation (PHKA) as part of a memorandum of understanding between WCS-IP and PHKA in July 2007. The maps of deforestation are property of WCS-IP, CI, and PHKA, but have been made freely available to anyone, electronically to improve transparency in Indonesia [1,2].
Processing of satellite imagery Sumatra-wide was executed by David L.A. Gaveau, Boni Adnam, Indra Kumara, Bambang Suyikno, Justin Epting and Hendi Sumantri. Daniel Juhn and Marc Steininger from the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International provided technical assistance in data processing for northern Sumatra and Sumatra-wide. Suyadi, Soaduan Sitorus, Aditiawarman Hasanudin, John Roy, Hagnyo Wandono, Firman Setiabudi, Deky Kristiantono, Susilo, Dadan Ramradi, Supriatna, Muhammad Zubair, Asiantori, Wakijan, and the local NGO ULAYAT provided additional information on forest re-growth, coffee prices and rural livelihoods in southern Sumatra. The KMLs were generated with Tiles2KML. David Tryse offered technical assistance in KML technology. References 1. Gaveau DLA, Adnan B, Epting J, Kumara I, Suyikno B, et al.
